It has been full 23 years since the once-famous rapper Vanilla Ice belted out “Go Ninja, Go Ninja, Go!” in New Line Cinema’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II. In the wildly popular scene, the Turtles fight their way into a night club where Vanilla Ice just so happens to be performing. As to not scare the attendees, Vanilla Ice improvises the “Go Ninja” song on the spot to trick the crowd into believing the fight was part of his act.
As one of the most memorable scenes in the original TMNT trilogy, fans were left wondering if it would be reenacted in Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, set to release later this year. All the speculation can now be put to rest as reports have surfaced that the role will be filled by none other than Seattle rapper Macklemore. (“Thrift Shop”, “Can’t Hold Us”, “Same Love”)
The casting of Macklemore is certain to come as somewhat of a shock to hardcore fans of the franchise. Aware of the eminent skepticism, Macklemore took to Twitter to ease some of the concern, stating “lemme guess Kendrick should have gotten the role right? haha…they hated the studios for pickng (sp) Heath Ledger as Joker. they hated on Daniel Craig as 007. obviously the fans have been wrong b4. theyll be chanting my name after it releases…just watch”
No details have been given on the totality of Macklemore’s contribution to the film but if it makes anywhere close to the level of impact that Vanilla Ice’s cameo appearance did, fans are in for a treat. The release date for the film is set for August 8, 2014.
