Donald Glover, who also goes by Childish Gambino, came out as gay on a cover to Tamia’s 1998 hit song “So Into You.” The actor/rapper/singer intentionally used male pronouns in the song to make his declaration.
“I think you’re truly something special — Just what my dreams are really made of. Let’s stay together you and me boy, there’s no one like you around”, Gambino sang on the track.
The former 30 Rock actor also took to Tumblr to speak about the cover and his declaration. “I really wasn’t trying to make any type of formal statements on the track — I just didn’t feel the need to lie about who I am by changing words like ‘boy’ to ‘girl’, stated Childish Gambino. “We now live in a society where being gay is no longer looked at with the stigma that it was the past. I felt it was important to bring reality to my lyrics and express myself in a way that truly reflects my feelings.”
This is not the first time Gambino has revealed his sexuality through song. On Ariana Grande’s ‘Break Your Heart Right Back’ he rapped, “Listen, you got a man but your man ain’t loyal — Don’t understand how to spell it out for ya — Yes, I’m a ‘G’, from the ‘A’, and they ask ‘Y’ — Sorry had to tell you I’m a nice guy — Naw I’m a sick guy — Money too much, I step on stage and girls move too much …”
Childish Gambino has yet to announce a follow-up to his 2013 sophomore album “Because the Internet,” which debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200 Chart after selling 96,000 copies in the first week.
